Created as a single edition CD many years ago, as a gift for a friend's son upon his birth.
A curiosity of this piece: one of the central field recordings from which it is made is a homemade contact mic on a commercial CD burning machine. For An Infant's Gardens, we wanted the music to be made up of the sound of its own production. We used to always have open mics in the spaces around us when recording so that the environment a piece was created in could be mixed into it. For An Infant's Gardens we wanted the act of production to be audible, so we produced the first batch of 50 discs with an aural hole in them where we imagined the CD production machine to be. We then had 50 CDs made, recorded the machine producing this hollow version, and then went back and added the sound of production to the original. Finally, we destroyed the 50 original CDs.
As with most of our CDs from the 90s and 00s, 50 of the finished version were mass produced by a pressing plant, and then the majority were destroyed so that a limited edition of commercially created discs were available. In this case, an edition of 4 were kept. One was for Augustus on his birth, the other three found their way into the CfOC box sets we sold in 02001.
