about

On October 13th, 14th & 15th, 02023, EDME hosted a New Music Festival in Eugene, Oregon, USA, Earth.

It was amazing.

Our Sunday show was at First Christian Church. Earlier in the year, we sent out a call for new music scores for our ensemble to perform. Of many received, we chose nine for this program.*
This album is the aural document of that wonderful afternoon and those lovely scores. It was phenomenal fun, and we are profoundly appreciative of the composers who submitted works.

Here are the program notes for the festival:

Our weekend of events is about variety and diversity. Featuring a broad spectrum of voices and an intriguing number of styles, the Festival’s three concerts have something for everyone. Whether you like electronic peculiarities, video projections complementing sonic landscapes, or unique expressions of traditional and extended technique on acoustic instruments, our program delivers a wide variety of contemporary classical compositions. We hope to create a unique experience for our listeners and introduce the local community to new and innovative means of making music.

As our mission states: “The Eugene Difficult Music Ensemble performs and commissions underrepresented experimental works in order to open ears and minds. We work to expand the definition of what music can be and what music is capable of achieving, as well as who is capable of achieving it.”

Our first concert displays a creative slate of performances by our selected guest artists at the Farmer’s Market Pavilion Plaza. Robert Long’s psychedelic projections, responding to live sound from the performers, will accompany their sets on the outer wall of the Pavilion. Our second and third concerts display the works of living composers that were competitively selected by our members to create a colorful, multifaceted exhibition of styles and instrumentation. These pieces include solo and ensemble compositions interpreted from regular notation, graphic scores, and even animations!

Both our core ensemble and visiting musicians have worked months to perfect their interpretations. Regardless of which show you attend (or even if you attend all of them!), we have plenty of quirky music to share.

This festival is the result of countless hours of organizing, fundraising,
practicing, volunteering, and rehearsing among EDME members and
guest musicians. It is made possible through the support of the local
community, which includes the individuals, Patrons, non-profits, and
businesses who gave us time, money, space, and equipment towards our cause. Because of their generosity, we are able to make all concerts free and open to the public for the second year in a row. Please take time to review the list of community supporters in the album credits and consider becoming one yourself. We thank everyone who helped make the Festival possible!

Enjoy the shows!
