about

In 01999, The MVM created a soundmap of Chicago, IL, USA, Earth. It was a website running Flash. It consisted of hundreds of scans of a map of Chicago, at varying levels of detail, from a full city bird's eye view, down to specific blocks. Clickable icons on the maps allowed visitors to hear hundreds of field recordings: one from each of the many sites with an icon. The goal was to envision a different form of mapping, aural mapping, that could give a richer "picture" or knowledge of a place, to personalize it, but also to capture a single moment, like a snapshot in sound. A double CD was released to document this project. One CD features the map recordings from 14 of the sites. The other CD features an unedited recording made on a subzero day, as we walked wearing our binaural mics along the Lake Michigan shore line.
