about

Vík í Mýrdal is part of a series of graphic scores, both still and animated, based on explorations of the topographical features of various regions. I am interested in how land formations are sculpted, and other ways in which this sculpting process can be explored and experienced.

Additionally, I am inspired by the common experience of walking, wandering through new spaces, and how this simple exercise can be meditated on and recreated in alternative modes. I see the stochastic forces at work in forming/decorating the earth as analogous to (sub)/conscious forces that direct spontaneous decision-making (improvisation) in groups of people. How might people’s collective choices when acting in a group setting correlate with the ways the wind carries wildflower seeds in the air to populate the face of a mountain? How can I convey all of the aspects of this type of spatial exploratory movement in audiovisual realms?

- MA Tiesenga

MA Tiesenga is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice delves into the intricate inter play of procedure and enaction within collaborative performance contexts, deftly shaping these dynamics through various idioms. Inspired by an affinity for the outdoors, Tiesenga draws analogies between these concepts and the art of cartography, illuminating the parallels between a map and a musical score.
This exploration opens doors to musically navigate, inhabit, and realize theoretical terrains.

As a composer, visual artist, sound artist, multi-instrumentalist, and improviser, Tiesenga merges these creative identities by embracing the potential of expanded notation systems as an inquisition into new sonic possibilities.

Tiesenga’s creative collaborations include work with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Wild Up, Théâtre Musical Tokyo, Long Beach Opera, Kunsthalle for Music, SPEAK Percussion, Dog Star Orchestra, Ensemble Supermusique, and ensembles at the Eastman School of Music, New England Conservatory, California Institute for the Arts, Yale University, and Darmstädter Ferienkurse.
